The Famous Crossing

The Washington Crossing Inn adjoins the spot where General George Washington and his troops assembled before the historic crossing of the Delaware River on Christmas night in 1776. At this time, the McConkey family operated the ferry crossing and ran the ferry Inn, which had been built at the intersection of the present day River Road and Route 532 in the late 1750s. The McConkeys were instrumental in helping the Continental Army with its daring strategy. It is most likely General George Washington dined at the Ferry Inn before the crossing, and that Hessian officers captured during the battle were imprisoned there after Washington’s remarkable victory.

The Bernard Taylor Home

In 1777, the McConkey Family sold the Ferry Inn property to Benjamin Taylor III. It included 304 acres, all of what is known today as Washington Crossing. His son, Bernard, managed the ferry service, ran successful and established a fishery, while it thought that another son, Mahlon, ran the Ferry Inn. Bernard Taylor built the oldest part of the present day Washington Crossing Inn in 1817. The two story stone homestead consisted of a dining room and kitchen on the first floor and two bedrooms on the second. The kitchen’s large open hearth still exists today and serves as the focal point of the Inn’s restaurant, the Hearth Room. Taylor is thought to have constructed the remaining original section in 1840. Taylor ran the ferry until 1823. The first covered bridge was built in 1834, connecting what was called Taylorsville to the village of Titusville in New Jersey. The Taylor home and farm remained in the Taylor family for 100 years.

The Present Day Inn

In 1919, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania created a park along the Delaware to commemorate the famous crossing by General George Washington and his troops in 1776. At this time, the name of the picturesque village was changed from Taylorsville to Washington Crossing. In the 1930s, the Haven family, who had been operating the Old Ferry Inn in the village, purchased the Taylor Family home. They renovated the home, constructed the colonial style addition that is now the present day lobby and ballroom. The original 1817 home was preserved as the inn’s public dining spaces: the Hearth Room and Covered Bridge Room. In 2009, brothers Dr. Eli Mordechai and Mr. Jerry Moradi purchased the inn to continue the tradition of the preserving the landmark of Bucks County hospitality.

Symptoms are often mild or absent in young children, but the disease becomes more serious with advancing age. Recovery can vary from weeks to months. Following hepatitis A illness, immunity is lifelong.

Those at increased risk include travellers visiting friends and relatives, long stay travellers, and those visiting areas of poor sanitation.

Prevention All travellers should take care with personal, food and water hygiene.

Hepatitis A vaccination As hepatitis A vaccine is well tolerated and affords long-lasting protection, itis recommended for all previously unvaccinated travellers.

Hepatitis A in brief

Tetanus is caused by a toxin released fromand occurs worldwide. Tetanus bacteria are present in soil and manure and may be introduced through open wounds such as a puncture wound, burn or scratch.

Prevention Travellers should thoroughly clean all wounds and seek appropriate medical attention.

Tetanus vaccination

Country specific information onmedical facilities may be found in the ‘health’ section of the FCO foreign travel advice website.

Typhoid is a bacterial infection transmitted through contaminated food and water. Previous typhoid illness may only partially protect against re-infection.

Those at increased risk include travellers visiting friends and relatives, those in contact with an infected person, young children, long-term travellers, and those visiting areas of poor sanitation.

Prevention All travellers should take care with personal, food and water hygiene.

Typhoid vaccination

Cholera is a bacterial infection transmitted by contaminated food and water. Cholera can cause severe watery diarrhoea although mild infections are common. Most travellers are at low risk.

Prevention All travellers should take care with personal, food and water hygiene.

Cholera vaccination This oral vaccine is recommended for those whose activities or medical history put them at increased risk. This includes:

Cholera in brief

Hepatitis B

Hepatitis B is a viral infection; it is transmitted by exposure to infected blood or body fluids. This mostly occurs during sexual contact or as a result of blood-to-blood contact (for example from contaminated equipment during medical and dental procedures, tattooing or body piercing procedures, and sharing of intravenous needles). Mothers with the virus can also transmit the infection to their baby during childbirth.

Hepatitis B inIndonesia 2% or more of the population are known or thought to be persistently infected with the hepatitis B virus (intermediate/high prevalence).

Prevention Travellers should avoid contact with blood or body fluids. This includes:

A sterile medical equipment kit may be helpful when travelling to resource poor areas.

Hepatitis B vaccination Vaccination could be considered for all travellers, and is recommended for those whose activities or medical history put them at increased risk including:

Japanese Encephalitis (JE)

JEis a viral infection transmitted to humans from animals (mainly pigs and birds) by mosquitoes which typically breed in rice paddy fields, swamps and marshes, and predominantly feed between dusk and dawn.

Those at increased risk include travellers who are staying for a month or longer during the transmission season, especially if travel will include rural areas with rice fields and marshland.

Travellers on shorter trips (typically less than a month), or trips that take place outside the peak transmission season and those who restrict their visits to urban areas are usually considered to be at very low risk.

Japanese encephalitis inIndonesia JE occurs in this country with year-round transmission. The affected areas are Kalimantan, Bali, Nusa Tenggara, Sulawesi, Mollucas, Papua (Irian Jaya), and Lombok. The peak periods of risk are typically November to March, and June and July in some years.

Prevention All travellers should avoid mosquito bites particularly between dusk and dawn.

Rabies is a viral infection which is usually transmitted following contact with the saliva of an infected animal most often via a bite, scratch or lick to an open wound or mucous membrane (such as on the eye, nose or mouth). Although many different animals can transmit the virus, most cases follow a bite or scratch from an infected dog. In some parts of the world, bats are an important source of infection.

Rabies symptoms can take some time to develop, butwhen they do, the condition is almost always fatal.

The risk of exposure is increased by certain activities and length of stay (see below). Children are at increased risk as they are less likely to avoid contact with animals and to report a bite, scratch or lick.

Rabies inIndonesia Rabies has been reported in domestic and wild animals in this country. Bats may also carry rabies-like viruses.

Rabies vaccination Pre-exposure vaccinations are recommended for travellers whose activities put them at increased risk including:

A full course of pre-exposure vaccines simplifies and shortens the course of post-exposure treatment and removes the need for rabies immunoglobulin which is in short supply world-wide.

Rabies in brief

Tuberculosis (TB)

TB is a bacterial infection transmitted most commonly by inhaling respiratory droplets from an infectious person. This is usually following prolonged or frequent close contact.

Tuberculosis in Indonesia

The average annual incidence of TB is greater than or equal to 40 cases per 100,000 population ( further details ).

Travellers should avoid close contact with individuals known to have infectious pulmonary (lung) TB.

Those at risk during their work (such as healthcare workers) should take appropriate infection control precautions.

Tuberculosis (BCG) vaccination

According to current national guidance, BCG vaccine should be recommended for those at increased risk of developing severe disease and/or of exposure to TB infection e.g. when the average annual incidence of TB is greater than or equal to 40 cases per 100,000 population. See Public Health England’s Immunisation against infectious disease, the Mens Straight Fit Jeans Grey Grau 089 coated grey 36/36 Brand size 36/36 Esprit raRJcU1i

For travellers, BCG vaccine is also recommended for:

There are specific contraindications associated with the BCG vaccine and health professionals must be trained to administer this vaccine intradermally (just under the top layer of skin).

Following administration, no further vaccines should be administered in the same limb for 3 months.

The BCG vaccine is given once only, booster doses are not recommended.

Malaria is a serious illness caused by infection of red blood cells with a parasite called Plasmodium. The disease is transmitted by mosquitoes which predominantly feed between dusk and dawn.

Election officials said they likely will not be able to say how many provisional ballots have been cast until Friday. The delay could make it difficult to know the outcome of close races on election night.

This year’s contests take place at a time when suspicions are running high about how American elections are conducted — from concerns about Russian hacking to charges of voter suppression to alarms being raised about voter fraud.

The news about the software glitch plays into those fears.

A computer failed to record changes in the registrations of more than 18,700 Maryland voters, state officials announced over the weekend, meaning that those who want to participate in Tuesday’s primary will have to cast provisional ballots.

Most of the people affected had tried to change their...

Clarence M. Mitchell IV , a former state lawmaker and political observer who hosts the "C4" radio show on WBAL, called the revelation and its timing on the eve of an election “incredible.”

“It does ruin people’s confidence in the voting process,” he said, adding that the winner of a potentially close governor’s primary race and state legislative races might not be known for days.

The MVA’s Nizer said the agency underestimated the number of affected voters because officials were trying to tell people quickly about the problem.

“In our sense of urgency to inform the public given the close proximity of the primary election, the numbers that were initially reported did not accurately reflect the total scope of the people impacted,” Nizer said in a statement.

Two Democratic General Assembly leaders who oversee election issues called for Nizer to step down and accused the Hogan administration of attempting to “sweep this under the rug.”

and Del. Anne R. Kaiser said in a joint statement that Nizer should step down immediately.

The Democratic candidates for governor on Monday fanned out across the Baltimore-Washington corridor to rally voters to support their campaigns in Tuesday’s primary election for Maryland governor.

“Their initial failure was bad, and their explanations are worse,” the lawmakers said.

On Sunday, after Conway called for a hearing into the computer glitch and its late discovery, Hogan’s spokeswoman, Amelia Chasse, called the problem a “clerical error” and dismissed Conway’s concerns as a “conspiracy theory.”

Late Monday, Chasse issued a statement saying the Hogan administration was “obviously incredibly disappointed that this happened.
